Your baby’s first year goes fast — faster than most parents expect. One of the questions I hear often is “When should we schedule milestone photos?” The answer depends on what stages you want to remember, but a few key ages consistently photograph beautifully.
Here’s a simple breakdown of milestone sessions during your baby’s first year and why each one matters.
Newborn (5–15 days)

Newborn sessions focus on those early details that change quickly — tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.
This stage is ideal for:
- Posed, sleepy images
- Wrapped portraits
- Family and sibling photos in a calm studio setting
Newborn sessions are typically scheduled before baby arrives and finalized once they’re born.
Around 3–4 months: personality emerging

At this stage, babies are more alert and expressive. While not every family chooses this milestone, it’s a great option if you love:
- Big eyes and first smiles
- Tummy time images
- Early personality starting to shine
This age is especially meaningful for parents who want more than just newborn and one-year photos.
6–7 months: sitting milestone

This is one of the most popular milestone sessions — and for good reason.
Most babies can sit independently around this age, which allows for:
- Upright, expressive portraits
- Natural interaction and curiosity
- A great balance between baby features and personality
Six-month sessions are often a favorite because babies are happy, engaged, and not yet on the move.
9–10 months: movement and curiosity

This stage captures a very different kind of energy. Babies may be:
- Crawling
- Pulling up
- Exploring everything
These sessions are less about stillness and more about documenting how your baby interacts with the world. They’re perfect for families who love candid moments and connection.
First birthday: a full-circle moment

First birthday sessions celebrate everything your baby has become in their first year.
These sessions often include:
- Clean, timeless portraits
- Family photos
- Cake-smash/celebration
It’s a meaningful way to mark the end of the baby year and the beginning of toddlerhood.
Do you need every milestone?

Not at all.
Many families choose:
- Newborn + 6 months + 1 year, or
- Newborn + first birthday
Others prefer documenting more stages throughout the year. There’s no right or wrong choice — it’s about what you want to remember and how you want that story told.
Planning milestone sessions ahead of time
Milestone sessions tend to book more smoothly when planned in advance. Babies grow and change quickly, and availability can fill up faster than expected — especially for studio sessions.
If you’re already scheduling newborn photos, it’s often easiest to talk about milestone timing early so everything feels simple and intentional.

Photographing your baby’s first year isn’t about checking boxes — it’s about capturing stages you’ll never get back. If you’re unsure which milestones make the most sense for your family, I’m always happy to help you think through options that fit your style and priorities.
