If you’re expecting a baby and thinking about newborn photos, timing matters more than most parents realize — especially here in Connecticut, where experienced newborn photographers book out well in advance.
One of the most common questions I get is “When should we book?” The short answer: earlier than you think. Here’s the why.
The ideal time to book a newborn photographer in Connecticut
The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester.
Most professional newborn photographers only take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Babies arrive on their own schedules, and photographers need flexibility built into their calendars to accommodate early, late, and surprise arrivals. Once those spots are filled, that’s it.
Booking during your second trimester:
- Secures your place on the calendar
- Gives you priority scheduling once baby arrives
- Removes one major thing from your to-do list before the chaos of late pregnancy
Waiting until the third trimester — or after baby is born — often means limited availability or needing to compromise on timing.

Why newborn photography calendars fill up quickly
Newborn sessions aren’t like standard portrait sessions. They require:
- Longer time blocks
- Fewer sessions per week
- Flexibility for baby-led pacing
Because of this, many newborn photographers can only photograph a handful of newborns each month. Once those spots are reserved, there’s very little wiggle room.
This is especially true for posed, studio newborn photography, where safety, setup, and experience matter.

When newborn photos are typically taken
Most posed newborn photography sessions take place when babies are between 5–15 days old. During this window, babies are generally sleepier and more easily settled into those classic, curled poses many parents love.
That said, booking early doesn’t mean committing to a specific date before baby is born. Instead, your due date is penciled in, and your session is finalized once baby arrives.

What if your baby is already here?
If your baby has already been born and you haven’t booked yet, it’s still worth reaching out as soon as possible.
While availability may be more limited, I often photograph:
- Slightly older newborns
- Wrapped newborn sessions
- Newborn sessions that include parents and siblings
The experience may look a little different than a classic sleepy session, but the images are still beautiful, meaningful, and timeless.

Why early booking leads to a better experience
Booking early isn’t just about availability — it’s about peace of mind.
When your newborn session is already on the calendar, you don’t have to:
- Panic-search photographers postpartum
- Worry about missing the ideal window
- Make rushed decisions while exhausted
Instead, you can focus on recovering, bonding, and settling in — knowing everything is already handled.
