As a Newborn photographer in Connecticut, here’s a question that I often address with expecting parents: “What will this be like?” Today I wanted to cover a bit more about the newborn photo session experience and how it is about more than just pictures.
Before you arrive: No Stress, Just prep
The newborn photo session actually starts before you even show up! One of the wonderful things about working with an experienced photographer that has a studio is that there is very little stress in setting up that the parents have to do. Leading up to the session we will talk about color options, props and any other detail that you are hoping to capture during your newborn photography session. The morning of your session I take the time to plan out and coordinate all the props, headbands, wraps and the workflow for your newborn photoshoot. I take pride and care in making sure that not only does everything coordinate and highlights the beauty of your baby, but that I have a flow in mind that causes minimal disturbance to the baby. In the meantime, each family receives a prep guide that highlights some small things that they can do to ensure that we have a sleepy, happy baby in the studio.

Stepping Inside the Studio: A Relaxing Escape
The Madison CT studio where all my newborn photo sessions take place is setup to provide my clients with a cozy, peaceful atmosphere. Everything from the temperature to hints of Lavender in the air to the sound machines is designed to keep your baby sleepy and relaxed. But more than that, the studio is also setup to provide a peaceful space for the parents to relax. While my assistant and I work on posing and caring for your baby (yes, we even change diapers!), you get to take a “break” from sleepless nights and constant attention that new parents face. This is your chance to sit back, put your feet up and simply be present. Enjoy an assortment of light snacks or a warm cup of coffee (decaf and tea are also provided!) while you get to oooh and ahhh at how adorable your baby looks.

During the Session: Trusting the Expert
As a CT photographer with over 13 years of experience with families and newborns, you can trust that your baby is in safe hands. I am always up to date on the latest standards of safety and care of an infant. While I take the time to plan a workflow that will help keep the baby soothed, all sessions are baby-led. That means that we take care to follow the baby’s cues and pause for feedings, diaper changes and cuddles when needed. Sessions that include advanced posing are always done with an assistant – which means that parents can relax while I have a second hand of well-trained hands to ensure that your baby is safe. But above and beyond that, I also take the time to make sure that parents and siblings are well-cared for and happy so we can capture those loving, authentic family shots.

The Final Result: A Lasting Memory
When your session is done and you’re back at home, you will receive a gallery with images that you get to make your selections from. The online galleries provide new parents with a comfortable, no-pressure way to review their photos in detail and make their selections. Once the selections are made, I will hand-edit every image, ensuring that all the tiny details are perfect and then send over the final gallery. All images arrive in color as well as black and white versions so you get double the number of images. Once you see your gallery, we can work together to turn some of those images into beautiful heirlooms like an album or wall art, ensuring that they aren’t lost on a hard drive.
