Bringing your newborn baby for a professional photoshoot is a cherished tradition for many families. It’s a wonderful opportunity to capture those fleeting moments of your baby’s early days in a beautiful and timeless way. As a newborn photographer based in Madison, CT, I understand the importance of creating a stress-free environment for both parents and baby during these sessions. Here are some valuable tips to help you plan for a smooth and enjoyable newborn photo session:
Schedule Early: It’s ideal to schedule your newborn photo session during the first two weeks after your baby is born. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and more cooperative, making it easier to capture those adorable sleepy poses. If you are expecting, I recommend reaching out to photographers in your second trimester and booking by the third trimester to assure that you have a spot on their calendar.
Choose the Right Photographer: Look for a photographer with experience in newborn photography who can handle and pose newborns safely. Take the time to research and find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision for the photoshoot. Want to learn a little more about how to choose a newborn photographer that fits your style? Prepare the Baby: On the day of the session, try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the appointment to ensure they are sleepy during the shoot. Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing to avoid any marks on their skin.
Feed and Comfort Your Baby: Plan to feed your baby right before the session to ensure they are content and satisfied and plan to have extra feedings if needed during your session. Bring extra diapers, wipes, and any comforting items your baby may need, such as a pacifier or favorite blanket.
Be Flexible: Babies can be unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Be prepared to go with the flow and trust that your photographer will still capture beautiful moments, even if your baby isn’t cooperating perfectly.
Relax and Trust the Photographer: As a parent, it’s natural to feel anxious about how your baby will behave during the session. Remember that newborn photographers are skilled at soothing and posing babies and creating a calm environment. Trust their expertise and relax, knowing that your baby is in good hands.
Enjoy the Experience: Above all, remember to enjoy the experience of capturing these precious moments with your newborn. Relax, soak in the joy of parenthood, and trust that your photographer will create beautiful images that you will cherish for a lifetime.
What to Expect During Your Newborn Session
My newborn sessions are typically held in my home studio, which is fully equipped for newborn photography. I provide everything you need for the session, including props, blankets, and backdrops.
The session itself will last about 2-3 hours, and I’ll take my time to capture a variety of poses and expressions. I’m always happy to take breaks for feeding and diaper changes, and I encourage parents to be involved in the session as much or as little as they feel comfortable.
After the Session
After your session, I will carefully edit your images and create a beautiful online gallery for you to view and share. You can then choose your favorite images to purchase as prints, digital files, or albums.
