Welcoming a New Sibling: Tips for a Smooth Newborn Photography Session with Siblings

Hi there! I’m so excited to share some insights and tips for all the amazing parents out there who are planning a newborn photography session with siblings. As a newborn photographer based in Madison, CT, I absolutely love capturing those precious first moments between a newborn and their older brother or sister. These are memories that will last a lifetime, and I’m honored to be part of that journey with you.

One of the most common questions I get is, “How can I make sure my toddler or older child is comfortable during the session?” I completely understand how important this is to you—and I want to make sure you have a smooth, stress-free experience.

Prepping Your Little Ones (Without the Pressure)

The key to a successful newborn photography session with siblings is preparation, but I always advise against putting too much pressure on them. Older siblings are just as excited (and sometimes a little nervous!) about welcoming their new baby brother or sister, and we want the session to reflect that natural love and joy.

Before the session, I suggest talking to your child about how much fun we’re going to have. Let them know that we’ll take some beautiful pictures together and that I can’t wait to see how amazing they look in the photos! It’s all about making them feel involved and excited, not pressured.

I’ve found that when siblings feel like they’re part of something fun rather than something they “have to do,” they relax, smile naturally, and we get those heartwarming shots everyone loves.

Studio Space: Cozy and Warm

Our studio here in Madison, CT, is designed with newborns in mind. It’s a warm, cozy environment that helps keep the newborn comfortable and sleepy for those perfect, peaceful shots. Since the space is small and we keep the temperature up to create a soothing atmosphere for the baby, I always recommend planning ahead for the sibling’s part of the session.

Once we’ve taken the family and sibling photos, it’s often best if the older sibling can leave the studio for a bit. Whether they’re picked up by a grandparent, parent, or caregiver, having some playtime outside the studio or a fun trip to a nearby park is a great way to ensure they don’t get restless. Plus, it allows us to focus on those beautiful newborn portraits without distraction.

Leave the Rest to Us—We’ve Got This!

With years of experience photographing newborns and young children, my assistant and I have plenty of tricks up our sleeves to make sure everything runs smoothly. You don’t need to worry about a thing. We’ve worked with all kinds of sibling dynamics, from toddlers to older children, and we know exactly how to keep things light and enjoyable.

We use creative games, silly noises, and other techniques to keep your older child engaged during their part of the session. And if there’s a meltdown (because let’s be honest, it happens!), we stay calm and patient. You’d be amazed at the magic we can create, even in less-than-perfect moments!

Cherishing the Bond

There’s something truly special about seeing that first bond between siblings. Whether it’s a sweet kiss on the baby’s forehead or a shy smile as they sit next to their new brother or sister, these are moments you’ll treasure forever. That’s why I’m so passionate about what I do—capturing these fleeting moments in a way that you can look back on for years to come.

If you’re planning a newborn session with siblings, I’d love to chat and help you prepare. Together, we’ll create a relaxed, enjoyable experience for everyone involved and produce stunning images that tell the story of your growing family.

See you soon at the studio!

Warmly,
Kat
