Tips to prepare for a newborn photography session

Tips to prepare for a newborn photography session

As a newborn photographer behind Catherine King Photography, I have seen many parents come in for their first ever newborn photography session. It’s always an exciting time, but I also understand that it can be nerve-wracking for new parents. That’s why I’ve put together some tips to prepare for a newborn session in my CT studio, to help you feel more relaxed and confident during the shoot.

Tip #1:

Make sure your baby is nice and sleepy for our session by keeping them awake just a little bit more that morning and maybe consider adding an extra feed right before you leave. Newborns are more cooperative during a photo shoot when they are sleepy and relaxed. To help your baby get into this state, try keeping them awake for a little longer than usual that morning by giving them a bath. If you are driving less than an hour, consider feeding the baby right before you leave. If your drive is longer, we can always plan for you to top the baby off upon arrival. This will ensure that your baby is well-fed, comfortable, and ready to sleep during our session.

Tip #2:

Be ready for extra feeds. If you’re supplementing or bottle feeding, pack extra bottles and bring a pacifier just in case. Newborns can be unpredictable, and they can get hungry or fussy during a photo session. By bringing extra bottles and a pacifier, you’ll be prepared to handle any feeding or soothing needs that may arise.

Tip #3:

Do not stress packing props or clothing for the baby. Everything you’ll need is provided in the studio. I have a wide range of blankets, wraps, and props that we can use to create beautiful and unique photos of your newborn. You don’t need to bring anything except your baby and any special items you’d like to include in the photos, such as a special blanket or toy.

If you want a specific themed setup or have personal items that you would like included, reach out to me ahead of time and we can make sure we incorporate them.

Preparing for a newborn photography session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. By following the tips that I send along to all my newborn clients prior to their session, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the experience of capturing beautiful photos of your newborn that you’ll treasure for a lifetime. Remember, I am here to guide you through the process and make it as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Today I am also sharing a few sneak peeks from miss Avery’s newborn photography session. She was the sleepiest little baby and I could not get enough of her! I am so honored to have been chosen once again by this amazing family for their newborn photos and enjoyed watching the boys (who I photographed when they were babies!) snuggle their new sister. Enjoy the sneak peeks and scroll to the bottom of this post for information on booking your newborn photography in Connecticut.
