One of the questions I hear often from parents is this:
“Is it too late for newborn photos if my baby is already a month old?”
The honest answer is no. It is not too late.
The ideal window for sleepy, curled-up newborn photos is usually within the first two weeks, which is why I always recommend booking your newborn session during the second or third trimester when possible. Booking ahead gives you the best chance of getting on the calendar, choosing the photographer whose style you love, and having everything planned before baby arrives.
But life with a newborn does not always follow a perfect timeline.
Babies arrive early. Recovery takes longer than expected. Parents get busy, overwhelmed, or simply do not realize how quickly those first few weeks will go by. And sometimes, like with sweet baby Gianna, parents reach out after the baby is already here.
Gianna came to my Madison, CT newborn photography studio when she was one month old. Her mom contacted me after she was born, and we were able to schedule her session when I had an opening.
Because Gianna was a little older than the traditional newborn window, I went into the session with realistic expectations. At one month old, babies are often more alert, more stretched out, and less likely to stay deeply asleep through every pose. That does not mean the session cannot be beautiful. It just means we follow the baby’s lead.
For Gianna’s session, her mom loved soft neutrals, pink tones, and the little newborn swing prop I had recently added to the studio. We planned her setups around that soft, feminine color palette while keeping everything simple and sweet.
And truly, Gianna did beautifully.
We were still able to capture the tiny details, soft expressions, and sweet baby features her mom wanted to remember. While sleepy newborn poses are never guaranteed with an older newborn, beautiful images absolutely are.
That is one of the reasons I always tell parents not to panic if they missed the first two-week window. Yes, book early if you can. But if your baby is already three weeks, four weeks, or even older, reach out anyway.
A one month old newborn session may look a little different than a brand new baby session, but it can still be calm, meaningful, and full of images you will be so glad you have.
