Here are my top tips on preparing for your baby’s newborn photography session.
Schedule your newborn session ASAP!
It is always a good idea to book your newborn photographer as soon as you can. I usually advise booking your session when you are toward the end of your 2nd trimester. This will allow you plenty of time to research and book your photographer of choice, as well as begin looking for your family’s outfits for the photo session.
Choose what type of newborn photography session appeals most to you
There is no right or wrong answer to this question! When you are preparing for your baby’s newborn photography session, consider which images you tend to love most. There are many photographers who specialize in specific types of newborn photography so choose someone that works with your vision.

Start planning your family’s outfits
Once you’ve chosen your photographer and booked them, it’s a good idea to find a few options for your family’s outfits. Most photographers will gladly work with you to choose a perfect style. While some may offer dresses and family outfits for you to borrow, some others will consult on choosing the best options for you to purchase. Do not hesitate to reach out to your photographer to get their advise! After all, they do this day in and day out!
Talk with your photographer
Hand in hand with the last point, make sure that you have talked to your photographer! It’s important to understand expectations, as well as get their advise. If you’re planning an outdoor session, make sure that the location will work well with the time you’ve selected.
Your newborn photographer should be able to help you prepare the day of your session and advise on feeding times as well as any other tips that will yield a happy sleepy baby.
Relax and enjoy!
The most underrated point of all – relax and enjoy! If you’ve booked your photographer and got your outfits ready, you’re set to go! The day of your session try to relax and enjoy the experience.
Newborn photography sessions tend to be very calm and relaxing. Your photographer will know the best and safest way to handle your newborn baby so you’ll know they’re safe and sound.
