Newborn Session Details

Your newborn session is designed to feel calm, simple and fully guided from the moment you walk thorough the door. My Madison CT studio is set up specifically for newborn photography with wraps, props, headbands, bonnets and carefully selected pieces ready for you and your baby before you arrive.

Most parents tell me they feel relieved once they get here. I will guide the session every step of the way so you can settle in and enjoy watching your baby be photographed.

What to Expect

Newborn sessions are baby-led and move at your baby’s pace. Time is built in for feeding, changing, cuddling, and settling as needed. Some babies sleep deeply through most of the session, while others need a little more time and flexibility. Both are completely normal.

My goal is always the same: to create timeless, natural images while keeping your baby comfortable and safe throughout the session.

When to Book

The best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester. Since due dates can be unpredictable, I only take a limited number of newborns each month. Booking ahead gives you priority once baby arrives.

If your baby is already here, still reach out. I do my best to accommodate last-minute newborn sessions whenever my schedule allows.

Best Age for Newborn Photos

The ideal age for posed newborn photos is usually 5 to 15 days old. During that window, babies tend to be sleepier and curl more naturally into those classic newborn poses.

That said, older newborns can absolutely still be photographed beautifully. Sessions with older babies may include fewer deeply posed images and more awake portraits, wrapped setups, and natural expressions.

What is Included

Your session includes time in the studio, posing and styling guidance, access to wraps and studio accessories for baby, dresses for mom and professional editing of the final images you choose.

Depending on the package you select, your session may also include:

  • baby-only portraits
  • wrapped and unwrapped images
  • parent portraits
  • sibling portraits
  • additional setup variety

Family and Sibling Photos

Parent and sibling portraits can be included with select newborn session options. These images are usually some of the most meaningful in the final gallery, and I always recommend including them if possible.

For siblings, I keep things simple and efficient. We typically photograph family images first or at the most natural point in the session so younger children do not have to wait longer than necessary.

What to Bring

For most newborn sessions, you only need to bring:

  • your baby
  • extra bottles or feeding supplies if needed
  • diapers and wipes
  • a pacifier if your baby uses one
  • a neutral outfit for family portraits, if those are included

The studio is stocked with newborn wraps, accessories, and simple styling pieces, so there is very little you need to plan on your own. We even stock diapers, wipes, extra pacifiers and anything else needed to make the session a success.

How Long the Session Takes

Session length depends on the package you book and on your baby that day. Some sessions are shorter and more simple (30-45 minutes), while full newborn sessions with family portraits naturally take longer (1-2.5 hours).

Because newborn sessions are baby-led, I always leave room for flexibility. I would rather move calmly and comfortably than rush.

After the Session

Your proof gallery is delivered shortly after your session (within a 2 week window) so you can select your favorite images. Once your final selections are made, your chosen images are professionally edited and delivered in your final gallery (within 2 weeks of selections being made).

Prints and products are also available if you would like to turn your images into keepsakes for your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my baby arrives early or late?

Babies do not follow our schedules which means that we have to remain flexible and accommodate changes. I take on a limited number of newborns each month in order to allow flexibility.

What is my baby is older than two weeks?

I have a lot of experience working with older newborns which may require a little more patience and an adjustment in posing. No baby is too old.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely! I offer a variety of packages that include family and sibling poses.

Do I need to bring wraps or props?

Nope! The studio is stocked with latest props, wraps, layers, headbands and tiny outfits. If you have an heirloom item you would like to include, just give me a heads up and we’ll incorporate it!

What should parents wear?

Once you book your session you will received a comprehensive guide that includes what to wear, how to prepare and much more!
