Incorporating siblings and families in a newborn photo session is a concern to many clients.  I wanted to take a few moments to tell you a bit about why I love having older siblings at newborn sessions, as well as how I help to make sure it all runs smoothly.

Why I love incorporating siblings and families in newborn photography sessions

Adding a new baby to the family can be a big adjustment for everyone.  This is especially true for older siblings.  While some siblings love participating and helping with their baby brother or sister, others – not so much.  As a mom to two girls myself and having gone through bringing a baby home, I know it is never easy.  And after over 6 years as a newborn and family photographer, I have seen it all.

Including siblings in newborn sessions can seem stressful, but can make the older child feel special.  I will work closely with you to make sure that not only is everything done with safety in mind, but that the older children have a wonderful experience during the photoshoot.

How to prepare siblings for a newborn photography session

While every family and siblings and circumstance is different, here are a few tips that I have learned along the way to help your newborn session run smoothly.

Don’t spend too much preparing or “warning” the older children about the newborn photos.  Simply let them know that you’ll be going as a family and answer any questions they might have.  For older kids, I find setting a positive reward at the end can be very helpful – such as a visit with grandma or a special outing for ice cream.

Remember that newborn sessions with me will be fun.  I can promise that.  I’ll have toys and some fun noise-makers.  Based on the child’s personality I’ll let them have some space and get comfortable or jump right in, if they’re ready.  We’ll sing songs, tell jokes, and everyone will have a good time.

Siblings and family photos are usually done right toward the beginning of the session and kept relatively short, especially if you have a toddler in tow.  This gives us the perfect amount of time to capture happy kids without stressing anyone out.  Once the siblings and family photos are finished, I always advise that someone (dad, aunt, grandma, sitter, etc) take the older siblings home or out for some fun.  Not only does it serve as a positive reward, but it gets them out from a small space where they have to behave.  From here, mom/dad can sit back and relax while I finish the baby-only portion of the newborn photoshoot.   Trust me, it’s a win-win.
